The Importance of Small Wins

With the New Year quickly approaching, I thought I might give people a new idea for a resolution this time around. Huge goals like losing 50lbs or starting a savings account can fizzle quickly without the proper tools for attaining it. Sure, we all want to improve ourselves by losing the weight or by securing our futures financially, but how do we get there? The answer: Small Wins.
Here at CHW, our mission is to educate people about wellness and inspire them to make choices that result in a lifetime of vibrant health for themselves and their families. That’s something we work toward every day, and if we could reach the entire population in one day, we would. But we can’t! So we celebrate our small wins. During each of our weekly staff meetings, we share our wins for that week with the group. Anything that made us feel like we moved a step closer to our mission is fair game, and we share them because we are proud. That week, we won and we are one step closer to achieving our goal.
Not only do small wins feel good, but they help keep you motivated along the way. Instead of going gung-ho at the gym this year in an effort to drop the weight, maybe try cutting out soda instead; one step closer. After that, your next goal might be taking the stairs at work or at the mall. That’s your next small win and there you are; already two steps closer to your goal and you’re seeing that number on the scale start to drop. You’re on your way! So go ahead and keep your major goals, but don’t forget to recognize and celebrate your small successes along the way.
